다큐멘터리 사진 작업을 하고 있는 노순택은 일상에서 분단이라는 상황을 느끼거나 자각하지 못하는 경우들이 종종 있으나, 분단은 실제로 우리 일상에 가까이 있고, 분단의 현실이 사회와 개인의 삶을 어떻게 왜곡시기고 있는지를 보여준다. 노순택은 분단을 단지 이데올로기의 대립으로 바라보는 것이 아니라 보편적인 인간의 문제로 접근하고 있으며, 자신만의 독특함 미적 감각을 통해 시각화한다. <애국의 길>은 한국사회를 상시적인 비상상황으로 파악하고, 그러한 위기 상황이 한국 근현대사의 모순과 어떻게 얽혀 있는지를 탐색하는 <비상국가>시리즈에 포함되는 작업으로 이념에 사로잡힌 다양한 집단의 모습을 다루고 있다. 전시에 선보인 <애국의 길>은 보수단체가 한미동맹을 강조하기 위해 태극기와 성조기를 나란히 사용하는 모습, 각종 집회에 동원된 사람들의 초상 등을 통해서 냉전의 결과물로 만들어진 분단이 이후 세계적으로 냉전체제가 붕괴한 이후에도 한국사회에서 여전히 작동하며, 이것이 이념대립을 통해 극단화 되는 상황을 보여준다.

Through documentary photography Noh Suntag renders visible the geopolitical division deeply embedded in the everyday life of the Koreans even though we might not feel or recognize it in our daily life. He is also interested in showing how the state of national division distorts society and individual lives. Instead of viewing the division as a result of ideological conflict, Noh approaches it as a universal problem and in turn visualizes this through photography. Road to Patriotism belongs to the series Emergency State, which examines how South Korea’s consistent state of emergency has introduced a sustained state of socio-political exceptions that have shaped modern and contemporary history of Korea. The piece from Road to Patriotism included in the exhibition depicts far right-wing conservatives waving the Korean flag and the American flag side by side to emphasize the ROK-US alliance, and portraits of people mobilized in various rallies. These scenes illustrate the lingering impact of ideological confrontation in the post-Cold War era.
